Whirling Dervishes – dervishes aim to reach the source of all perfection. This is sought through abandoning one’s ego or personal desires, by listening to the music, focusing on God and spinning one’s body in repetitive circles, which has been seen as a symbolic imitation of planets in the Solar System orbiting the sun. Original painting is oil on canvas, 36” x 24”.
Fatima Rigsby has been drawing since early childhood and began painting in 1985. These paintings are from a series of darshan (described as an “auspicious sight” of a holy person, which bestows merit on the person who is seen) and dervish paintings done over a period from 1990 – 2000.
Fatima has been a friend of Lama Foundation since 1971. She was a resident at Lama in 1999 – 2001 and has continued to serve Lama in many ways from her home in Taos, NM.
